Animals think in pictures, not words. I don’t think chickens feel sadness, per se. They will adjust quickly. Like Buugette said, their minds are programmed to be based on food, with sides of nests, dust-baths, and predator avoidance.

Chickens do have brains, yes. Interestingly, most of a chicken’s brain is located at the back of their skull, particularly the stem and parts that keep a chicken alive. Hence, why a chicken can run around with its head cut off, and even survive for a short time.
It’s widely believed that chickens are colour blind and have poor vision- this is not the case. They actually have better vision than humans. Humans have three different cone types in their eyes which mean we can perceive red, green and blue colours.

Empathetic: Some chickens have shown the ability to be protective of not only their own chicks, but those of others. Manipulative: Chickens can be cunning and show some sort of machiavellian manipulation so as to get them what they want.
