Are cows dangerous to humans?

Cows generally don’t pose a threat to humans without a good reason, although bulls are more unpredictable. When working with any animal, especially one as big as a cow, it’s important to understand the risks and to be properly trained in how to safely do so.

Cows with calves are particularly going to be threatening to a dog. Everyone likes to cite statistics as to how many more people have been killed by cows than sharks, but I am of the strong opinion that 99% of those deaths were preventable.

When they are being aggressive to people, cows and steers will either kick, ram, bunt, or crush the human in their path. Kicking is a common problem with beef cattle. This may be because they are not bred to be gentle. They are raised by their moms, and unlike dairy cattle, they are monitored and handled minimally.
