Penguins are endemic to the southern hemisphere, the breeding season of penguins depend upon the species and the habitat. They breed during the depths of the antarctic winter and in some of the most desolate, coldest, windiest and downright grim places on the planet during the season of 24 hour darkness.
How do emperor penguins breed?
Emperor penguins breed on the sea-ice in bitterly cold conditions. There are no materials to build nests from but the eggs have to be kept warm until they hatch. So the female, who leaves the colony over winter, gives the egg to her partner who carefully puts it on his feet and covers it with a skin fold.
The only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter, emperor penguins trek 50–120 km (31–75 mi) over the ice to breeding colonies which can contain up to several thousand individuals.
Where do penguins live?
In fact, only a few species of penguin live so far south. Several species are found in the temperate zone, and one species, the Galápagos penguin, lives near the equator. The largest living species is the emperor penguin ( Aptenodytes forsteri ): on average, adults are about 1.1 m (3 ft 7 in) tall and weigh 35 kg (77 lb).

Where do gentoo penguins live?
Around 40% of all Gentoo penguins live in the Falkland Islands in South Atlantic Ocean. Breeding grounds are also located in other sub-Antarctic islands as well as on the Antarctic Peninsula. Their preferred habitat within this range is along the shoreline where they can easily access food whilst staying close to their nests.
