About 80-100% of the penguin’s diet consists of fish. These two are deepest divers among all. However, emperor penguins eat fish along with crustaceans and cephalopods. Instead of crustaceans and cephalopods, king penguins compensate with krill.
So, what do penguins eat?
Each penguin species feed on the type of fish or food available in their habitat. Since king and emperor are the largest penguin species among all, so they belong to the group named ‘great penguins.’ Their hometown is subantarctic islands, as well as the Antarctic. Both species feed upon the fish, especially the lantern fish.
Lanternfish are a favored fish because of the bioluminescence that makes it glow in the dark waters and makes it easier to catch for the penguins. Penguins also eat silverfish, and it’s mostly emperor penguins that consumer Silverfish as it is found in the Antarctic waters.
Do Galapagos penguins eat sardines?
Galapagos penguins also eat sardines when available in their hunting grounds. As the small penguins cannot dive deep, they hunt near the surface where small fish like mullets and sardines swim. Sardines are the preferred fish for the Humboldt penguin, the Galapagos penguin, and the African penguin.

It’s sad that there are only a few penguin points around, They have a great menu and the food in Delicious. Won’t be back, The chicken I ordered was hard as a rock! I have never had chicken that hard before took it back they asked me if I want anything else, I said yeah I’ll take some fish instead because I didn’t really want to.
What do sprats feed Penguins?
Sprats are small fish that are mostly used for feeding penguins that are kept in zoos. These tiny fish are a favored food for Humboldt penguins as these are small in size and easy to swallow for the penguin. These small fish are eaten by Galapagos penguins as the ocean currents bring these fish near the island where the penguins reside.
