At the Exploratorium, we dissect cows’ eyes to show people how an eye works. A tough, clear covering over the iris and the pupil that helps protect the eye. Light bends as it passes through the cornea. This is the first step in making an image on the retina.
What happens when you dissect a cow’s eye?
If you squeeze the optic nerve, you may get some white goop. That is myelin, the fatty layer that surrounds each fiber of the nerve. When you’re done dissecting the cow’s eye, wrap all the pieces of the eye in plastic and throw them away. If you used a razor blade, dispose of it properly.
